Read the report here – National Coastal Safety Report
On the Central Coast, we are fortunate to have 15 surf clubs that patrol the beaches between September and April each season. The success of these patrols is shown in the number of rescues and preventions each club does during the season and as a result, we have had zero drownings on our patrolled beaches again this season.
As the National Safety Report states 51% of all drowning deaths occurred 1km – 5km from a Lifesaving service. In an attempt to reduce this number on this number Surf Life Saving Central Coast deploys its Support Operations Team to respond and monitor outside the flag area. The amount of rescues this team does justifies the need for their deployment and is critical in reaching our aim of zero drownings on the Central Coast. Unfortunately, though the Central Coast had two coastal drownings at unpatrolled locations.
“The message is simple this season, always swim between the red and yellow flags and always wear a lifejacket when rock fishing.” said Central Coast lifesaving Director, Simon Cusack.
